2022 Challenge - “Make My Day”
WHAT IS IT THAT WOULD “MAKE YOUR DAY”?
What is it that would make your spirit soar—that would “make your day!” Dream big. Think about what would be the most wonderful thing in your life that could happen... did happen...will happen...or you wish would happen. Could it be a very special family event like the birth of a grandchild? Perhaps it’s a fabulous trip you long to take to Venice, seeing Machu Picchu, a safari or riding a camel to the great pyramid. Maybe it’s something on your dream bucket list, a dream of having a quilt in the Houston show, winning the lottery or how about world peace?
The Challenge: Create a quilt that expresses the theme “Make My Day!”
Rules: There are none! The quilt can be any size or shape. All quilting techniques and surface embellishments are allowed: piecing, hand or machine appliqué, embroidery, photography, painting, foiling, beading, any type of quilting. The style is up to you. A hanging sleeve is optional.
Details: One entry per member. There will be a $100 prize for Viewer’s Choice, and a $50 prize by random drawing from among all participants. The same member cannot be awarded both prizes. Please submit an entry that has not been shown to the Guild before.
Due date: Email one overall photo and one closeup of your quilt, in JPEG format, to Deb Shoemaker at DebShoemaker22@gmail.com by Friday, October 21.
Quilts will be shown, and winners announced, at the November meeting, either via Zoom or in person as the situation requires.
Questions: Email Marcia Degner at msdegner@gmail.com
Thank you to everyone who participated in the “Make My Day” Challenge.
Congratulations to our winner.

Jane Gavlick:
Title: “Joy”
Artist’s statement: “Joy” is what I felt when our daughter was married this year in April. We have 4 children, and 3 of them married long ago, but Cyndi did not find the “Right Man” until recently. So, she became a first-time bride at 57; that’s why I chose the double wedding ring design to make a wall hanging for myself to hang on the same wall as wedding pictures of our 4 children.
Marge Lehrer:
Title: “Pumpkin Patch”
This quilt reminds me of the pumpkin displays along the roads in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts
It would make my day to be able to see that during this fall season.
Sheila Solen:
I have always wanted to visit the Galapagos Islands. It would certainly make my day to plan a trip and actually go there; it would be a unique opportunity to see new animals and understand the science behind how they evolved. I would love to get up close and personal with the animals both on land and in the water.
My quilt includes Galapagos animals using raw edge applique. I have included the Red Footed Booby, Galapagos Flamingo, Galapagos Tortoise, Galapagos Penguin, and last, but not least, the Sally Lightfoot Crab. They are combined with traditional piecing using fabrics with turtles and sharks. Second best to going there has been making a quilt about it. I will hang it in my den.
Elaine Silberman:
When my cat, Yale, wakes me up in the morning by sitting on my chest and purring I know it will be the start to a wonderful day. He makes me smile every day.
Karen Berman:
Every morning I start my day by going for a long walk and listening to an audio book. I can honestly say it makes my day! Not only does it energize me, but the books fill be with wonder, adventure, knowledge, laughter, mystery and sometimes even sorrow. What can be better than a good book to read (listen to) each day?
Marcia Degner:
What would make my spirit soar? Oh, to relive a glorious 7-week road trip the length of Route 66—the last of many road trips with my late husband.
Amy Chiera:
One of the things that make it so special is that when my daughter was very young, she asked me to make her a quilt and chose that pattern. She picked out all the fabrics that went into her pinwheel. I had lovingly stored the “scraps” from it and was able to make new pinwheels for my newborn granddaughter’s quilt !

“God’s Light Show”
“Nothing makes me happier than a good storm. And at night they’re super spectacular. This is my tribute to storms.” And here was my inspiration.
Barbara Barron:
Every day creation is renewed This piece expresses my appreciation. The colorful fabrics and paints reflect my intensions to make my day brighter for myself and others.
Deb Shoemaker:
What would make my day … living as far out in the country as I can get, on a farm, with horses, chickens, cats, a dog, lots of wildlife and birds, a flower garden and a vegetable garden!
Dellie Krebs:
